Artist Talk by Alfreda McHale, Wednesday 22nd June 2011, 6pm, The Conservatory, Royal Pump Rooms, AMA Members free, visitors £3
The Association of Midland Artists (AMA) has organized a presentation by Leamington based artist Alfreda McHale on Wednesday 22 June in The Conservatory at the Royal Pump Rooms. The bar is open from 6pm for networking opportunities with artists and makers. The talk will start at 7.15pm.
Irish born Alfreda McHale is a contemporary installation & video artist who has exhibited nationwide and globally. She was trained as a fine artist at Warwickshire College and Birmingham Institute for Art & Design. Mostly Alfreda works with found objects like buttons, trolleys and cutlery. She produces works which are informed by a feminist art practice whereby she scrutinizes the traditional female roles within the domestic sphere. Other keywords that relate to her practice are memories, order, control and obsessiveness. Her unconventional pieces make you think about what it is to be a woman in our society but they often make you laugh as well.
During her lively and informative presentation she will introduce you to her practice with the help of many colourful images of her fascinating artworks.
The association of Midland Artists (AMA) was set up in 1985 and currently has around 70+ members, most of who live in Warwick District. The AMA is concerned with the production and appreciation of contemporary art. Painters, sculptors, printmakers and potters are encouraged to become members, to exhibit their work and to enter local and national ‘open’ competitions. AMA organizes annual shows in Trinity Church in Leamington and meets ten times a year in the Baptist Church Hall to hear a programme of speakers.

Heartbreak Productions Presents Pinocchio, Jephson Gardens
15th & 16th June 2011, 7pm
Pinocchio has a new voice... A voice with rhythm, rhyme, rebellion and relentless recklessness.
Pinocchio, Heartbreak style is the story of Geppetto the wood carver’s puppet and his spirited quest to become a “real boy” by proving himself brave, honest and generous.
Performed in the great outdoors, the show embodies song, dance and plenty of mischief making whilst avoiding the sugary sentimentality of Walt Disney’s fairytale this lively adaptation of Carlo Collodi's 19th century book, draws it’s inspiration from the scout movement.
Director, Peter Mimmack saw parallels with the Pinocchio story and that of the scout organization where good citizenship in young people is nurtured through non-formal education & an emphasis on practical fun activities in the outdoors.
“A scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend upon him.”
And so Pinocchio's character has been re-carved for contemporary audiences under Peter’s direction and his cast of five professional male actors or should that be his scout group!
We recommend you come with family, friends and a mouth watering picnic to enjoy Pinocchio’s world of: Adventure - Woodcraft - Camp life - Endurance – Chivalry – Life Saving.
Suitable for ages 5 to 50 and well beyond. For more shows, tour venues and dates please visit www.heartbreakproductions.co.uk

Hamlet @ Eathorpe Village Hall (CV33 9DE) by Two Gents Productions
8pm Saturday, 19th February 2011
Two Gents are a London-based Zimbabwean company who have bowled over village halls and venues in the UK and around the world with their unique and popular take on Shakespeare. They visited Live & Local venues in the autumn with The Two Gentlemen of Verona and are typically defined by their audience-centred, physically engaging yet technically minimalist style.
Set in the twilight of a pre-colonial Zimbabwe; a world of unyielding beliefs and ritual, where the afterlife and the present co-exist. Hamlet confronts madness and reason when he returns home to find his father murdered, his mother incoherent and a new, dangerous chief in power.
As the corpses mount, who buries who, and what danger is lurking in the wings of this small kingdom?
Two actors, two props and the convergence of two cultures are all it takes to create an urgent, poetic and spiritual adaptation of the rarely seen First Quarto of this Shakespeare classic. Treating Shakespeare with both respect and irreverence, the larger than life performers take on all the roles, adding some rough and tumble with seamless moments of audience interaction.
“Whereas some Shakespeare fans believe the bard should not be tampered with, Two Gents Productions… show that a 75 minute version of the tale can pack just as much, if not more of a punch than its longer cousin” – British Theatre Guide.
90min running time (NO INTERVAL), children over 8 yrs old. Tickets: £5.50-£7.00

AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH JUSTIN CURRIE
Tue 25nd Jan - 7pm - Leamington Assembly
When Del Amitri’s singer / songwriter Justin Currie released his first solo album, What is Love For in 2007 he described it as ‘eleven thunderously dreary dirges’. Fortunately, not everyone agreed with him and the album won accolades from critics, fans and fellow artists, as a thing of dark and starkly honest beauty.
In 2010 Currie returned with a second album The Great War, which delivered a bracing set of original compositions that break yet more creative ground – and further cemented Currie’s place as an ambitious and versatile solo artist.
"I didn't want to repeat what I'd done on What Is Love For," Currie states. "What Is Love For was intended as a very introspective record, and it was so sad and dark that I didn't really expect it to get any airplay. But The Great War is much brighter and more accessible; there are actually three or four positive love songs on there, which is unusual for me. This time, I wanted more major keys, and more variety in the tempos. I don't write a lot of up-tempo songs these days, so it took me a while to write enough to be able to get the kind of balance I wanted.
"I also used the device of making little jokes out of the songs," he continues, "so quite a few of the songs on The Great War have punchlines that completely reverse the assumed meaning of the song. I find that enormously satisfying when it works. A famous poet, whose name I forget, said that a poem must always have a little revelation at the close—a quiet epiphany—and I see no reason why songs can't sometimes do the same. Why repeat to fade? Why not end on a handbrake turn, a slap in the face or a 'reveal'? I tried to make the entire album do this, so that the last line of the last song is an unmasking."
Justin Currie has plenty of experience in defying musical expectations. He was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. Between 1982 and 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers, releasing six much-loved studio albums before amicably parting ways.
"It's a big difference being a solo operator," Currie observes. "What you lose in companionship, support and input, you gain in creative control. But most of the elements of what I do haven't changed all that much. I'm still looking for melody and lyrics that I can feel something from, and trying to put them into the standard structures of the rock or pop song. I love those structures; to me, the verse/chorus/middle-eight thing still seems filled with endless unexplored possibilities."
The combination of uplifting tunes and darker lyrical themes has long been a recurring motif in Currie's songwriting. "Del Amitri were often described as 'bittersweet' for that very reason," he notes, adding, "Do I do this deliberately? I don't know. I am an enormous devotee of pop melodies, from Cole Porter to Amy Winehouse, Smokey Robinson to Buzzcocks. Lyrically, more often than not, I seem to gravitate towards the ambiguity of feelings, the struggle with motivations and doubt in relationships, self-loathing and disappointment—somber things sometimes, but with a scintilla of hope, or at least catharsis. As a songwriter, I use melody to make all of this less maudlin, hopefully, and to create tension.”
"I love to undermine a lyrical conceit with a contrasting tune," Currie asserts. "I like to sew doubt in the listener's mind. Does he mean these things? Is this song actually as melancholy, defeatist or cynical as it seems? Or is this guy a romantic who's optimistic about the consoling power of love?”
"If I have a mission as an artist," he concludes, "it would be to get a little more poetry into the great warehouse of rock music. All I can do is get it out there and fight to be heard; that's the great war."

The Assembly presents: Gordon Smith - Beyond belief, Tuesday 21st September
There has long been a tradition in folklore that the seventh son of a seventh son is blessed with extraordinary gifts – and Gordon Smith provides living proof of that convention. Born in Glasgow, the seventh son of Samuel Smith, who was himself a seventh son, Gordon has been seeing, sensing and hearing spirit people since early childhood, and he will be sharing this gift with demonstrations of mediumship in theatres throughout the UK in 2010.
After observing the disquiet his uncanny talent aroused in those around him while he was growing up, Gordon closed his mind to it while he was growing up, until, at the age of 24, he awoke to find a friend’s brother standing at his bedside; he later learned that the brother had died in a fire that night. The visit spurred him to start over 15 years of study and practice to develop his outstanding abilities as a medium, or messenger from the spirit world, under the tutelage of some of the legendary figures in the spiritualist church.
Many years later, Gordon Smith is now one of the world’s top mediums and spiritual teachers, conducting mediumship workshops and events both in the UK and abroad. Through these, he has established an international reputation for his ability to pinpoint exact names, places and detail as opposed to merely offering vague generalizations.
He has made numerous television appearances - most notably featuring in ‘Mediums: Talking With The Dead’, a three-part programme in the BBC ‘Everyman’ series, and hosting his own ‘Psychic Therapy’ show for Sienna Productions/Bio Channel - as well as becoming a best-selling author, with his ninth title, ‘Why Do Bad Things Happen?’, published last year.
In 2010, Gordon will be giving demonstrations of mediumship on a lengthy tour of theatres around the UK. His ‘Beyond Belief’ tour offers the opportunity to meet the man who has captivated audiences worldwide with his astonishing gift, delivering messages from spirit with his distinctive mix of down-to-earth humour, passionate commitment and compassion for others.
He will also be available to give expert comment on spiritual and paranormal subjects to the media throughout the year.
Observing Gordon at work proves a fascinating journey into the metaphysical world. Quite how he does what he does is inexplicable - but few can argue that his outstanding gift has brought comfort and healing to thousands of people worldwide.

Leisure Studies in Warwickshire and the West Midlands
A group of very experienced and well qualified adult tutors in Warwickshire and the West Midlands have got together to launch a brand new venture. From this week there will be a new website, and associated leaflets and posters, offering high level leisure courses to local adults looking to expand their horizons this autumn.
All the tutors associated with the scheme at present were previously tutors working for The University of Warwick Open Studies Programme at the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, and most of the tutors still work for Warwick. The tutors are responding to the present economic difficulties facing the University.
Warwick Leisure Studies spokesperson tutor Julia Larden said:
Adult Educational Studies in Cultural and Leisure areas is a fine British Tradition which dates back to the nineteenth century. I think it is one of the things any civilised country should have! However university Adult Education is under huge pressure at present. We love teaching for Warwick University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning and we were shocked when they called us all in for a meeting last year and broke it to us, that, although they will be battling on, there would have to be some heart-breaking changes. In the upshot, a number of the excellent courses which Warwick offers to adult part-time learners have survived. Some of us are still teaching those and we are now determined that they will survive! However other courses: those which are primarily leisure courses not leading to the opportunity to study for a degree are no longer fundable by the University. Many regular local Warwick students will have opened a much thinner brochure this autumn. A group of Warwick tutors had a meeting and decided that we would carry on offering our old leisure courses and new ones too. On our website we have, so far, lively and well planned courses in Art History, Painting and Sketching, English Literature, Creative Writing and The Country House: all types of courses which have been a key part of good, high level, Adult Education programmes for many years. Every tutor has their own page. There is plenty of information to help would-be students choose, and it is also possible to contact the tutors before you buy. Prices have been kept deliberately as reasonable as possible.
If you would to find out more about the cultural leisure courses around Warwickshire and the West Midlands, log onto http://www.warwickshireleisurestudies.org/ if you are on-line. If you are not a computer user look out for the Warwickshire Leisure Studies leaflets and posters which will be appearing in libraries and other venues near you, or call 0121-707 8083.

"Collection Connection", lunchtime talk at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, Fri 9 July, 1pm
Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum are inviting local personalities to choose their favourite exhibits as part of a programme called Collection Connection. This month, Birmingham City University student Lisa Francis, has chosen a sculpture entitled English Family China (1998) by Christine Borland. Lisa is currently studying for an MA in Art & Design History.
Engish Family China is part of a series of ceramic sculptures made by Borland in 1998. A porcelain baby's head sits within a female pubis bone moulded from obstetric models. The porcelain is painted with traditional designs associated with 19th century English tableware. The work reflects on the original meaning of bone china, when porcelain was made of ground bone. It also associates the genetic links between mother and child and the repeated patterns on the porcelain consider the risks historically involved in childbirth.
Talking about English Family China, Lisa said: "This piece appealed to me because of its feminine references, also it looks so fragile but porcelain is quite sturdy as well."
The student ambassadors are taken on by Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum on a voluntary basis. Curatorial officer Sarah Brown adds: "We hope the scheme will help the gallery and museum to reach new audiences. It will also help the students to gain work experience, the chance to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes and opportunities to meet artists and find out more about the exhibitions."
Lisa Francis and Sarah Brown, Curatorial Officer for the Visual Arts at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, will discuss Christine Borland's sculpture in more detail on Friday 9 July at 1pm as part of our Friday Focus programme of talks.

Morte d'Arthur (The legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table)
By Sir Thomas Malory (newly adapted by Mike Poulton)
The Courtyard RSC Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
Gregory Doran, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Chief Associate Director, is to stage Mike Poulton's new version of Thomas Malory’s epic, Morte d’Arthur, the story of King Arthur’s attempts to unite his country. From the sword in the stone to the establishment of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail, Morte d’Arthur traces the adultery of Lancelot and Guenever and ultimately the death of the ‘once and future king.’ Blending myth and magic, this is the first major re-telling of the cycle in the English language.
Mike Poulton, who worked with Gregory Doran on the RSC’s production of The Canterbury Tales in 2005, has adapted Morte d’Arthur. ‘We’ve worked together long and hard to make this prose epic into a piece of theatre,’ said Doran. ‘Mike Poulton has used Malory’s text, but has been very clever at creating a modern dialogue whilst still retaining a sense of medieval dignity.’
Talking about why he wanted to stage Morte d’Arthur for the RSC, Gregory Doran said:
‘Malory wrote it whilst in prison during the time of the Wars of the Roses. It was printed by Caxton in 1485, and Shakespeare would have known of the work.
‘This epic has therefore been at the centre of our culture for over 500 years, and it’s a project that’s been around at the RSC for a long time. The director John Barton has done many workshops and explorations of the text over the years. I asked him about taking it one step further with a dramatization and he graciously said to me it was ‘completely impossible.’ That’s maybe why I’m trying to do it.’
‘Also in the context of the recent history of the RSC, with its 2006/07 staging of Michael Boyd’s award winning Histories cycle, it seems appropriate to see a story which was written at the time these events were actually happening performed on the same stage.’
Gregory Doran has been developing the project with the RSC’s current ensemble for the past two years, and it is his first time directing them in a production this season.
Sam Troughton is Arthur, with Forbes Masson as Merlin, Jonjo O’Neill as Launcelot and Kirsty Woodward as Guenever.
The cast also includes: Joseph Arkley (Kay, Pellieas and Angel), David Carr (Leodegrance and Accolon), Dyfan Dwyfor (Lamorack, Percival and Lavaine), Noma Dumezweni (Morgan Le Fay), Christine Entwisle (Margawse), Mariah Gale (Lady of the Lake, Ettard and Elaine of Astolat), Gruffudd Glyn (Gareth), James Howard (Ector, Bernard of Astolat and Lionel), Richard Katz (Pellinor, Nacien and Cardinal), Debbie Korley (Nimue), Dharmesh Patel (Agravain), Peter Peverley (Mordred), Patrick Romer (Archbishop of Canterbury), David Rubin (King Uriens and Lucan), Oliver Ryan (Gawain), Simone Saunders (Queen Igraine and Lynet) and James Traherne (King Lot, Red Knight, Baudwin and Bedevere).
Morte d’Arthur will be staged in three distinct acts over one evening. Katrina Lindsay has designed the production, with lighting by Tim Mitchell, music by Adrian Lee and movement by the RSC’s Head of Movement, Struan Leslie. Steve Tiplady, puppeteer and exponent of shadow puppetry has been brought in to evoke some of the magic in the piece.
Composer Adrian Lee is a long time collaborator of Gregory Doran’s, and previously composed music for his productions of Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra and The Canterbury Tales.
‘What I love about Adrian,’ said Doran ‘is that he manages to create a real medieval sound with traditional instruments with something very wild thrown in too. And he’s using Joji Hirota, the amazing Japanese drummer who worked with us on Macbeth in 2001.’
In 2008 Gregory Doran directed Love’s Labour’s Lost and an award winning production of Hamlet with David Tennant in the title role. The latter he also directed as a film which was broadcast at Christmas on BBC2. His most recent production for the RSC was Twelfth Night with Richard Wilson as Malvolio.

Harry Hammond, Halfway to Paradise
Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, The Pump Rooms. 2 July - 5 September 2010
An exhibition of prints by the first great photographer of British Rock 'n' Roll, Harry Hammond (1920 - 2009), comes to Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum this summer.
Starting in the late 1940s, Hammond captured the definitive images of virtually every leading British musician from Cliff Richard and Shirley Bassey to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as well as many visiting American artists including Buddy Holly and Little Richard.
This exhibition of over 100 of Hammond's prints from the V&A collection captures the emergence of British Rock. It features many of his most famous images of leading artists performing on stage and provides an insight into the wider music industry. The photographs will be set against a soundtrack of Rock music from the 1950s and 60s and there will be an interactive quiz.
Born in the East End of London, Hammond began his career as a promising society portrait photographer. During the Second World War he served as a reconnaissance photographer with the RAF. On his return to London he found himself increasingly drawn to the music industry and using his talent and professionalism as a portrait photographer he began to photograph a new breed of celebrity - the Rock 'n' Roll generation.
Hammond captured the liberal, post-war public attitude that embraced the popular music culture and earned respect not only for the innovative way he shot their performances, but for his consideration of his sitters' private lives. In 1952 the New Musical Express (NME) magazine was relaunched and Hammond soon became its primary photographer, taking some of the most famous images of the era and setting the standard of pop photography for future generations.
His daughter Carole Hammond said: 'Having moved here from London, Leamington Spa was my father's home in the later years of his life - a town which he regarded with great affection. He was very pleased to learn of the planned touring exhibition throughout the UK with one of the venues being the stunning Art Gallery & Museum within the Royal Pump Rooms. We are deeply proud of my father's lifetime's work and the wonderful legacy that he has left to the world.'

May & June 2010 Film Season
Warwick Arts Centre
As well as being one of the best independent cinemas in the region, Warwick Arts Centre is able to give its cinema audiences added extras in the way of film talks, Q&As with directors, and specially selected mini festivals.
The May and June programme, which has just been announced, is packed with these ‘special bonus features’, as well as seeing the 15th year of the annual home grown film festival Rapid Eye Movement, which has produced some rather famous names over the years.
In the last 15 years there has been a huge amount of technical change in cinema, and the Rapid Eye Movement festival has seen it all, from early, grainy VHS to slick, sophisticated digital images. Film making facility has followed a similar trajectory, with film makers finding it ‘easier’ to realise their aspiration on screen.
Over this time, REM has helped nurture and launch the careers of a number of film makers from the region, at least eight of whom have subsequently made their first features, including:, Debbie Isitt (Confetti, Nativity!) , Justin Edgar (Large), Shona Auerbach (Dear Frankie), and Chris Atkins (Starsuckers, Taking Liberties).
Others continue making short films while holding down the day job; festival regulars Nick Walker, Janet Vaughan and Derek P integrate film making into the diverse programme of Talking Birds, Alan van Wijgerden is a laboratory technician for the University of Warwick, Paul Hardy, Mark Presdee, Matthew Cooke and Vince Lund have set up their own successful production companies.
This years Rapid Eye Movement will take place on Tuesday 8 June. Anyone who would like to submit an entry should contact John Gore, Warwick Arts Centre, University of Warwick, CV4 7AL by Friday 4 June.
The Arts Centre cinema will also be hosting several international film directors, discussing their work. Warwick graduate Vadim Jean screens and discusses In the Land of the Free on Tue 20 May; Chilean film director Miguel Littin will visit on Fri 21 May to discuss Dawson Island 10, Chile’s submission for this year’s best foreign language film Academy Award; award winning Scottish director Justin Molotnikov screens and discusses his debut feature, Crying with Laughter on Wed 26 May; and on Thu 3 June another Warwick graduate (and alumni of Rapid Eye Movement) J Blakeson screens and discusses The Disappearance of Alice Creed, the hotly-tipped low budget British thriller which was the talk of the Toronto and London film festivals, and stars Gemma Arterton.
On Wed 9 June there will be another chance to see filmmaker Robert Kenner lift the veil on the American food industry in Food Inc, with a Q&A with Geoff Andrews of the BBC Radio 4 Food Programme. Also in June, two University of Warwick academics will share their thoughts on film classics: Dr Erica Carter from Department of German introduces the 1926 German animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed on Fri 11 June, and on Sun 13 June Critic and Film Studies Lecturer Victor F Perkins hosts a screening of Letter From An Unknown Woman and Q&A.
Warwick Arts Centre Film Programmer John Gore commented: “Summer is traditionally a quieter time for cinemas. I’m delighted that we have such a varied and full programme to offer an alternative to the World Cup. All this and still time for Sex and the City 2!”
Tickets for all film events can be booked online at warwickartscentre.co.uk or from the Box Office on 024 7652 4524.

‘Long Live Pere Ubu’ – The Spectacle Wednesday 24th February, 7 pm @ The Assembly, Spencer St, L/Spa, CV31 3NF
"Long Live Père Ubu!" - The Spectacle is the concert version of Pere Ubu's theatrical production, "Bring Me The Head Of Ubu Roi," an adaptation of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi. As should be expected from Pere Ubu it is a production without precedent. The boundary between musical and dramatic performance is obliterated. The very notion of what a rock band can and should achieve on stage is turned on its head. David Thomas plays the parts of both Père and Mère Ubu. Members of the band perform the music, choreography, as well as all dramatic roles. The instrumental line-up is augmented with electronica artist Gagarin. As with the full theatrical production, the staging is framed by large screen projections of bespoke animations from legendary film-makers The Brothers Quay.

Ash End House Farm 2nd July
Ash End House Farm is a family owned farm which has been operating as a children’s farm for nearly 30 years. The farm’s aim is to offer children coming to visit, a hands on, enjoyable experience whilst learning about animals.
On Thursday 2nd July, the nursery children of Bath Place Community Venture were given a chance to take advantage of Ash End House Farm and to learn about the animals. They were accompanied by parents, volunteers and staff from Bath Place. Firstly, they all got on a double-decker coach to the farm, which excited them very much, as many had not been on a bus before. When they arrived, the children all ate their lunch in one of the farm’s ‘Rustic’ barns, and had fun in the play area, before having a go at milking a very life-like replica of a cow. They then happily took part in Ash End’s ‘Farm Nursery Rhyme Tour.’ Within this tour, for an hour and a half, the children were given food to feed the animals and they had great fun as they were allowed to play with them. As well as this, they all enjoyed dressing up and singing along to nursery rhymes. All of the children were very excited because many had not had an experience where they had such close encounters with so many farm animals before. Before boarding the coach back, the children chose an egg to take home as a souvenir of their day out.
The outing was funded by the Round Table, the Leamington Rugby under 13’s and contributions made by parents. It was marked the first of many events to come from Bath Place Community Venture’s Nursery, and was definitely a success.

Constable Portraits: The Painter and His Circle @ Compton Verney 27 June – 6 September
As the first Constable Portraits exhibition opens at Compton Verney, the story unfolds of the part played in his success
by a Warwickshire patron.
As the first exhibition dedicated to portraits by John Constable (1776-1837) opens at Compton Verney, a
fascinating link with Warwickshire has emerged in the patronage of the owner of Malvern Hall, Henry
Greswold Lewis. Lewis, related by marriage to Constable’s Suffolk patrons the Tollemaches of Helmingham
Hall, invited the artist to Warwickshire early in his career, to paint his own portrait and that of his ward, Mary
Freer. Lewis then remained a loyal and regular patron throughout Constable’s life, writing touchingly to him
on the death of his beloved wife, Maria, and in that very same letter discussing his next commission. The
portraits of Mary Freer and Henry Greswold Lewis feature in the exhibition which is organised by and
originally shown at The National Portrait Gallery, London.
The exhibition also includes an important landscape of Malvern Hall itself, on loan from Tate. This painting
was executed almost entirely on the spot during Constable’s first trip to Malvern Hall in 1809 to paint
Lewis’s ward, Mary Freer. Although this portrait commission was the main raison d’etre for the visit,
Constable could not resist indulging his love of landscapes and made many sketches of the House and
grounds in his leisure time. Some years later he was commissioned to paint other versions of Malvern Hall,
from both the lake and entrance sides, by one of Lewis’s relations, the Countess of Dysart, and these and
subsequent versions of the subject now reside in museums and private collections around the world.
John Constable is recognised as a landscape painter of profound originality and popularity and yet his
portraits are often overlooked. Constable Portraits: The Painter and His Circle, opening 27 June at Compton
Verney, Warwickshire, will be the first exhibition dedicated to Constable’s portraits and the insights they
bring to Constable’s art, life and relationships...

Some members of The Heartbreak Hub (the educational arm of Heartbreak Productions) are producing Chatroom, a play by Enda Walsh next weekend. Described as "poignant and effective", this exceptional play connects with issues every teenager, parents with teenagers and anyone who comes into contact with teenagers, faces as it explores personal emotions and shifting alliances - preoccupations for any adolescent! One of the cast, Leila Mimmack - currently studying at Stratford College (and filming a new series for ITV to be screened in January 2010) - is going to the Edinburgh Festival with Left Field Theatre Company to perform a play called Normal by Anthony Neilson. Mink communique to members Monday 22 June 2009
Fear not friends - Don't Believe The Tripe.
As a result of numerous phonecalls following the publication of an article, "'Secret' bar could close after breach", by Holly Whitwell in today's Leamington Courier, we thought it best to let you know the truth. Mink will not be closing in a month's time.
I am sure that when Holly Whitwell gained a place at university to study journalism, her sights were firmly set on a career on a national daily, or perhaps a prestigious weekly heavyweight newspaper. Failing that, there was always the opportunity of a job at a highbrow monthly magazine, or hey even a weekly glossy would do. Unfortunately, competition was fierce, and poor Holly did not get her dream job, instead she ended up at The Leamington Courier. On the strength of her article today, where she ended up does not come as a major shock.
As you are all members of Mink, the misleading headline of the bar being a secret may be slightly odd to you. In fact, if Miss Whitwell ever read her paper, it may have been a shock to her too. The opening of Mink was advertised in said newspaper over a year ago.
The misleading headline may well fan the flames of outrage within the community, let's ignore the facts that there have been no issues of crime & disorder or environmental health since our opening. The planning application may well be refused, & to be honest, misleading articles like this do not help. But we can guarantee you, that this will not lead to the bar closing.
Miss Whitwell also claimed bar owner Steve Smith was not available for comment. The Courier has Mr Smith's numbers, but have never called for a comment. He has been available all week, & would have loved to have commented.
Mink will be celebrating it's 1st birthday in 2 weeks time. We will be holding a party & launching our new cocktail menu. You are all invited for drinks & cake.
As for Miss Whitwell, I bet her mummy & daddy still tell her they are proud of her xxx

EMMA - Written by Jane Austen - Heartbreak Productions
Adapted & Directed by Peter Mimmack, Co-adaptation by David Kerby-Kendall
Waltz your way through picnics, parties and posh frocks in this exceptional Regency rom-com. With an outstanding reputation for unique and distinctive adaptations over the past 17 years, Heartbreak Productions are delighted to be touring with Emma: a brand new adaptation of the heart-warming, engaging and charming Jane Austen classic. Having presented audiences with Romeo & Juliet performed by opposing Italian football teams and Henry V set within the confines of a boys’ boarding school, to name but a few of Heartbreak’s impressive list of productions, it will be no surprise that this latest offering breaks the boundaries of the everyday adaptation. Peter Mimmack, Artistic Director and responsible for the adaptation of Emma explains, “As I researched the book, I began to realise what was so special about Jane Austen: the beautifully drawn characters are unparalleled in literature, it really is no wonder that they are loved the world over.” He continues, “It was a specific scene from the novel where Emma draws her friend Harriet that led to my idea of creating a device to frame and tell the story from the perception of artists of the day.” The familiar, world-renowned story is still there: Emma, a clever, rich, bored and "slightly" spoiled young woman, throws herself in to the perils of mis-matchmaking getting it hopelessly wrong. The gossip and squabbles, the riddles, blunders and misunderstandings and the glorious romance all abound but there is more to this inventive and unique adaptation: the creation of a new perspective offers a refreshing insight to a classic we think we know. Peter explains again, “There is something about how art relates to society; it appears to have a leisurely nature and although rather elegant in execution, it can provoke debate about all points of society and in this case, a society at the heart of the novel. By adding the artist characters, we are able to look anew at the world Austen created.” As expected from a Heartbreak production, live music, dance and audience interaction abound as - from the engaging yet exasperating Emma to the sympathetic yet quintessential bore, Miss Bates - the multi-talented cast recreate the rich and varied personalities of some of the most vibrant characters from English literature as seen through the eyes of our most lauded artists, bringing them leaping from page to stage and into our hearts. Another power-packed and impressive adaptation from Heartbreak Productions: classic adaptations of the highest order.

Leamington Lemmings Ultimate Frisbee
Back in September of 2006 a very handsome chap called Lucas got bored of playing football. It wasn't because he was rubbish, in fact he was destined for greatness, he just didn't like the mentality of his fellow sportsmen. He had gone to two Ultimate Frisbee practice sessions whilst at Cardiff University, but for some reason stopped. So in the autumn of 2006, rather than kicking a ball around, he dragged a few of his work colleagues to Victoria Park in Leamington Spa, and they threw a Frisbee between themselves. Jumpers and car-keys were used to mark out endzones.
A yahoo mailer group was established, and the 'club' (if you could call it that!) was registered on the UKUA website. Lucas was faced with an online registration form with the field "team name" to be completed. He only knew of one other Frisbee team, the Warwick Bears, so he hastily plumped for the name the Leamington Lemmings (somewhat more modest than the Bears he thought). One by one, people started to discover the Leamington Lemmings, including the local cricket team of the same name (Lucas was unaware of them, until he received a hostile email from a club member!). It was Yan Pugh-Jones who was the first non-work colleague at practice, and the only one who actually knew the rules!
Attendance at 'training' sessions, which involved doing our best to chuck a disc between ourselves, starting to pick up, but was promptly halted by the on-set of winter - playing Frisbee in the dark is pretty damn hard. The Lemmings went into hibernation, and then early summer of 2007, Lucas yet again set about getting more Lemmings throwing pieces of plastic to each other. More and more people started attending, and the Lemmings got their very first website!
Lucas spent his lunchtimes designing a super sexy kit for the Lemmings, and Mrs. Disco and Mr Duncan (a friendly concept artist at Blitz Games) helped out with a cartoon sketch of a Lemming to add to the logo. Their first ever tournament was that summer in Glastonbury, Somerset - and suddenly everyone was hooked on Ultimate!
Since then the club has gone from strength to strength. In February of 2008 the Leamington Lemmings Ladies entered their first tournament, and the club hosted their first ever tournament, the Lemmings Luau. They will be entering both Open and Mixed Tours in the 2008 season, and aim to have both Junior and Women's teams for the following season.

Dans Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip at Warwick Uni
Thursday 16th October
Now, have we got a treat for you. In Week 3 we'll be welcoming a pair of unassuming gents who deserve to be described solely in superlatives. They are crusaders. They are pioneers. They are giants among men. They are Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip, and they are coming to your Union courtesy of the fine folk at U-Live.
This dynamic duo rocketed to prominence last year with their memorable debut single, the electro-rap crossover hit Thou Shalt Always Kill. A pointed, hilarious screed against the tidal-wave of crap that makes daily life such a chore, the track quickly gained notoriety for its acerbic lyrics and DIY video, and was trumpeted by everyone from Zane Lowe and John Kennedy to Mixmag and the NME (despite its deliciously accurate assertion that you should stay well away from the fashionista indie bible). It was, in fact, so good that it prompted one member of the Entertainments department to proclaim it one of the greatest things ever recorded. Mind you, he does also think Bush were one of the 90s' defining rock acts, so it's probably best to take that with a pinch of salt.
Nevertheless, beneath all the sermonising and witty wordplay there lay a serious point: that you should never take any proclamation at face-value and always think for yourselves. And therein lies the key to unlocking their chest of riches: each song is one thing on the surface and a different beast entirely underneath.
The duo's debut album Angles is one of the most inventive records to have emerged from any genre in years. "Hip-hop is art", Pip muses on Rapper's Battle over a cheeky sample of Dizzee Rascal's Fix Up, Look Sharp: "Don't make another pop hit, be smart!" On Angles, he and Le Sac have pitched their tent firmly between both camps, creating music as ferociously intelligent as it is infectious. Along with the colossal, Radiohead-sampling Letter from God to Man (#1 on the NME Club Chart at the time of writing), the album's highlight is its devastating title track, on which Pip assesses a seemingly minor incident from several different viewpoints, eventually exposing the wider social issues which underpin it. In Da Club it is not. Indeed, each track on the album assumes a different musical style and tackles a range of subjects, from teenage suicide to hip-hop's lyrical stagnation and the death of Tommy Cooper. There's even an analysis of the periodic table in there somewhere. Now that's innovation.
Support comes from Kid Carpet, a man who makes all sort of weird noises with the kind of keyboards you only used to have so you could press the fancy 'Demo' button on. Think of him as a kind of Jilted John for the electro generation.
Better still, make sure you get there early to catch the first act on - Astro-Physics dish up an absolutely stonking blend of hip-rop, rock and funk that comes on like a cross between Jurassic 5 and Rage Against the Machine. And I think you know that's an attractive proposition.
We've only been trying to get the headliners to play here, like, forever, so we're as pumped as a bouncy castle to be able to bring you this show. Smart, funny, satirical, stylish - Le Sac and Pip are all these things and more (I mean, check out that beard, for pete's sake). But hey, don't take our word for it: come figure them out for yourselves.

Heartbreak Productions presents Henry V @ Kenilworth Castle
Sat/Sun 16th/17th August 2008
For those of you who missed it in Jephson Gardens, and those who can’t get tickets for HAMLET, the
forthcoming performances of HENRY V at Kenilworth Castle must surely rate as a good alternative.
In a bold and inventive production, this brand new adaptation sweeps the audience along taking the story from boarding school to battlefield in a fast-paced and thrilling adventure. From the battles of Harfleur to Agincourt, the play has an intensity of action that sees Henry V mature from the outrageous Prince Hal cavorting with the infamous bawd, Falstaff into a respected and worthy king. Sometimes seen as a brutal blockbuster, this production promises to be bold yet sensitive, moving yet funny as it depicts an uplifting and pivotal piece of British history. Cast member Joe Herzfeld – a one-time Warwick School pupil – is delighted to be returning to his home area. “This nationwide tour of Henry V has been amazing” he said “but it will be doubly fantastic to finish the run in my old stomping ground. Kenilworth Castle is one of the UK’s most impressive landmarks, so
atmospheric, it’ll be a joy to perform there.” With patriotic fervour abounding, Henry V is fights and fantastic language! This unique and inventive Heartbreak interpretation sets the action in a boarding school with “pupils” recreating and enacting the
myriad of roles giving rise to ingenious and outstanding performances. Ultimately, Henry V is an inspirational and enriching story about the triumph of human spirit against
overwhelming odds that will resonate widely and provide an outstanding evening of extraordinary
entertainment. Already praised by both audience and press alike, the weekend at Kenilworth provides a great opportunity
to witness this “not-to-be-missed” open air production.
Bring picnics, rugs and seating and settle back for an inspiring and thought-provoking evening out.

Joe Lean and the Jing jang Jong @ Warwick Students’ Union
25th April 2008
Joe Lean’s inimitable ‘Jing Jang Jong’ have been
touted by every major publication as one of the names
to watch this year. Already a major favourite at indie
club nights everywhere with their anthem Lucio Starts
Fires, the band recently bagged second billing on the
prestigious NME Awards Tour, playing to packed houses
up and down the country alongside The Cribs, The
Ting-Tings and Does It Offend You, Yeah?, as well as
high-profile support-slots with Kaiser Chiefs, CSS and
Babyshambles.
The Jing Jang Jong check all the boxes for indie kudos
with a sound that’s totally contemporary: all
breakneck guitars, whipcrack drums and hummable
melodies. What sets them apart from the current crop
is their desire to draw on a host of influences dating
right back to pop’s heyday in the 1960s. As the
drummer for doo-wop revival babes The Pipettes, Joe
Lean evidently learned a thing or two about retro
chic, and it really shows in his band’s effortless
appropriation of elements from artists as diverse as
Smokey Robinson, Dion & The Belmonts and surf-pop king
Dick Dale.
That they were swiftly snapped up by Razorlight’s
current label should give you an indication of the
kind of big things that are being forecast by Mystic
Megs from all corners of the music industry. Upcoming
single Lonely Buoy looks set to rocket them further
towards indie superstardom, so we’re very excited to
be able to offer you the opportunity to catch this
band in the kind of intimate setting they won’t be
playing in for much longer.
